the year started 1/2 way through “The Golden Path 黄金路” at the 9pm timeslot, and “Kinship II 手足 II” at the 7pm timeslot.

9pm drama – 30 eps: The 30-episode action-packed “The Golden Path 黄金路” (11/12/07-21/01/08) was Mediacorp’s blockbuster series celebrating 25 Years of Chinese Drama with a star-studded cast: Chen Liping, Li Nanxing, Tay Ping Hui, Chew Chor Meng, Felicia Chin, Joanne Peh, Joey Feng, Cai Peixuan… The story spanned 25 years, depicting the life of a widow and her 3 biological children and 2 step-children. as step-brothers turned into enemies, with one all out for revenge, and topped with the fact that they fell in love with the same girl, the fighting went on constantly, till a point of no return…

7pm drama – 40 eps: “Kinship II 手足 II” (17/12/07-08/02/08) continued the saga of a family in the foot reflexology business. people broke off from the family, there were marital woes, love problems, and of course, business issues. It lasted for 40 episodes with Jesseca Liu, Elvin Ng, Yao Wenlong, Xiang Yun, Hong Huifang, Chen Tianwen, Cynthia Koh, Ann Kok, Darren Lim…

9pm drama – 21 eps: “Taste of Love 缘之烩” (22/01/08-22/02-08) was a romantic drama which revolved around cooking and starred Dawn Yeo, Michelle Chia and Chen Hanwei with Zheng Geping, May Phua, Joey Swee, the late MC King, Taiwanese
artistes Candice Liu, Zeng Shao Zong and Dai Yang
Tian. it replaced “The Golden Path 黄金路” at 9pm.

7pm drama – 25 eps: At 7pm was the ntv7 and Mediacorp collaboration “The Beautiful Scent 美丽的气味” (11/02/08-14/03/08), starring Pan Lingling, Zheng Geping, Dawn Yeoh, Leslie Chai, Annie Wong, Cai Peixuan, William San and Janelle Chin which was the remake of Mediacorp’s 2005 drama “My Lucky Charm 情来运转”.

9pm drama – 30 eps: Close to our hearts was the 30-episode drama about all the residents living in a block of one-room HDB flats and their quest for riches when they discover that a US$1mil water urn is in their midst, appropriately named “Just in Singapore 一房半厅一水缸” (25/02/08-04/04/08). the drama starred: Fiona Xie, Kang Chengxi , Chen Liping, Huang Wenyong, Adam Chen, Li Yinzhu, Patricia Mok, Nelson Chia, the late Lan Qingxi, Paige Chua, Apple Hong, Liang Tian, He Bin, Hong Da Mu, Ong Ai Leng, Rayson Tan, Zhang Wei… this drama had the highest viewership of the year till “Nanny Daddy 奶爸百分百” came out, then it was surpassed by “The Little Nyonya 小娘惹”.

9pm drama – 20 eps: “The Truth 谜图”: It was all drama and suspense the discover “The Truth”, and unravel the “谜图” (puzzle) (07/04/08-02/05/08) in 20-episodes with Zhu Houren, Joanne Peh, Tay Ping Hui, Shaun Chen, Rebecca Lim, Richard Low and Zhu Yu Ye. A treasure map which promises to reveal the whereabouts of gold buried by the Japanese during the war dig up more secrets than expected, especially those relating to family ties and love connections.

9pm drama – 20 eps: “Rhythm of Life 变奏曲” (05/05/08-30/05/08) was shown at 9pm. the 20-episoder had a youthful cast – Christopher Lee, Elvin Ng, Jesseca Liu, Jeanette Aw , Zzen Chang,
Dawn Yeoh and Julian Hee – and other than normal love-triangles and/or rectangles this drama focused on the choices which change one’s fate. The
twist in this drama was difficult to imagine – time travel!

7pm drama – 58 eps: Part I of this year’s megadrama “Love Blossoms 心花朵朵开” (28/05/08-15/08/08) had 58 episodes, and revolved around a family business dealing with flowers! also focused on were gambling, love and family problems… this drama stars: Chen Shucheng, Ivy Lee, Felicia Chin, Zheng Geping, Constance Song, Patricia Mok, Rayson Tan, Terence Cao, Zhang Yaodong, Adam Chen, Chen Tianwen, Koh Yah Hwee, Ben Yeo, Priscelia Chan, Jin Yinji, Eelyn Kok, Ng Hui, Lin Meijiao, May Phua, Darren Lim, Hong Huifang and Huang Wenyong.

9pm drama – 20 eps: “Beach.Ball.Babes 球爱大战” is the 2nd (modern = post 2000s) sports-themed drama after 2004’s successful idol drama revolving around swimming “The Champion 任我遨游”. focusing on beach volleyball, this drama tells of competition on the field, and in love, with family problems and connections thrown in. stars ah-ge Christopher Lee, with 3 princesses Jesseca Liu, Dawn Yeoh and Joanne Peh, and also Cui Peng, Jerry Yeo, Richard Low, Pan Lingling, Hong Huifang, Ye Shipin and Jade Seah.

9pm drama – 21 eps: “The Defining Moment 沸腾冰点” (04/08/08-01/09/08) marked ah-jie Fann Wong’s drama of the year. the story was mostly about Fann’s character, who went crazy, or so she thought so… and how it affected her family, her family’s business, and the many plans and schemes by her greedy uncle to oust her. at her side, unwavering, fully supportive, was Pierre Png’s character, a famous curry chef. also acting in this drama were: Jeanette Aw, Zhu Houren, Ng Hui, Xiang Yun, Darren Lim, Andie Chen, Carrie Yeo, Rebecca Lim…

Eunice Ng, Melvin Sia, Jane Ng… This 26-episoder aired in Malaysia on
ntv7 from 17 Dec 2007 – 7 Feb 2008, and in Singapore on Channel 8 from
18 Aug 2008 – 22 Sep 2008. This is the 2nd original scipt for
collaborations, following “Man of the House”.

9pm drama – 20 eps: “Nanny Daddy 奶爸百分百” (02/09/08-29/09/08) starred Adrian Pang, Yvonne Lim, Aileen Tan, Yao Wenlong, Brandon Wong and Yan Bingliang. in short, it’s a drama about a stingy bachelor who is a cleanliness freak, and his trails and tribulations when he is to look after his 9 month old niece. he struggles, and gets help from his new neighbour, whom he falls in love with, after having numerous feuds with her. this drama held the highest viewship for the year until “The Little Nyonya 小娘惹” came along…

onwards. This drama is a remake of Mediacorp’s drama “My Home Affairs

9pm drama – 20 eps: Crime Busters x2 叮当神探 (30/09/08-27/10/08) stars Tay Ping Hui, Dawn Yeoh, Shaun Chen, Paige Chua, Jackson Tan, Mariana, Richard Low, Hong Huifang, Huang Wenyong… and a whole lot of guest stars: Jesseca Liu, Michelle Chong, Celest Chong, Rebecca Lim, Alan Tern, Rayson Tan, Candyce Toh, Zhang Yaodong, Brandon Wong… the crime drama wasn’t all drama and seriousness, but it was quite light-hearted, especially between enemies-turned-lovers TPH and Dawn. it focused on 1 main case – The Surgical Demon, and had 4 smaller cases.

9pm drama – 20 eps: “By My Side 不凡的爱” (28/10/08-24/11/08) was a drama which aired in conjunction with the World AIDS Day. it sought to bring the message of the disease closer to everyone, by telling them them they story of 2 AIDS sufferers. one was a family man, the nicest guy a woman can hope for… but a one-night-stand overseas condemned him with the fatal disease. his family couldn’t accept that fact, but they finally managed to overcome all and support him all the way. the other AIDS patient was a young woman, who got AIDS from her boyfriend who died from the disease. she gets on with her life doing volunteer work, but refuses to love again, as she’s afraid her illness with be a burden. this drama stars: Chen Hanwei, Zoe Tay, Rui-en, Elvin Ng, Vina Lim, Terence Cao, Zhu Houren, Chen Tianwen, Brandon Wong, Ong Ai Leng, Ye Shipin…

9pm drama – 34 eps: “The Little Nyonya 小娘惹” (25/11/08-05/01/09) is 2008’s blockbuster drama. it starts in the 1930s, and spans 3 generations to the present day. it tells of how a young Peranakan woman, who deaf and mute, the daughter of her father’s second wife is ill-treated in the family, but she refuses to bow to fate, and runs away from home. she marries the man she loves and settles down, but war takes both their lives (she and her husband). the story continues with her daughter’s (who looks exactly like her but is normal) life, and it is even more miserable, as she accepts the status of a servant to stay and protect her grandmother (the 2nd wife), who has no standing in the household. as fate would have it, she meets and falls in love with the young master of an influential family, but jealously and feuds embracing the previous generation and her generation make it impossible for her to be with him. she is smart and she manages a business with her sworn-brother (who was actually the guy the family made her marry, but he accepted the fact that if she treats his late mother as her own, it should be more than enough to please her – his mother’s dying wish was to have her as his wife.)…
